Denmark leaves Microsoft:
digital sovereignty is making headlines!
Imagine moving from a large house owned by a foreign landlord to a comfortable small home where you are free to act as you wish. According to the Danish media outlet Politiken, Caroline Stage Olsen, the Danish Minister for Digitization, announced that Denmark will massively migrate the country’s government services out of the Microsoft ecosystem (Windows, Office 365) to open-source solutions Linux, Nextcloud, and OnlyOffice. Denmark leaves Microsoft.
Why this bold choice?
In two words: digital sovereignty. For Denmark to leave Microsoft, the objective is clear: no longer being dependent on American tech giants like Microsoft, AWS, or Google. “We must never be so dependent that we can no longer act freely,” explains the minister. An elegant way of saying: “our digital freedom is not for sale.”
Beyond geopolitical stakes, there is a very pragmatic economic logic: avoiding a costly massive renewal of Windows licenses in 2025 while benefiting from open, scalable, and controlled solutions.
Two-phase migration: a guided transition
- Phase 1 (June-August 2025): half of public officials gradually transition to Linux and LibreOffice with extensive technical support and training.
- Phase 2 (September-November 2025): all personnel join this new infrastructure and adopt Nextcloud for secure collaborative sharing and OnlyOffice for a fluid online office suite compatible with common formats.
Tools for Digital Freedom
- Proxmox Private Cloud Infrastructure Cloud Privé Proxmox: hosting of secure and customizable Linux servers
- Nextcloud: secure and self-hosted file sharing
- OnlyOffice: online collaborative work, compatible with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF
